Well, gastric bypass is a procedure that's been around for a very long time, over 55 years in this country. It was really the first type of procedure performed for weight loss. So we have a lot of information, a lot of statistics on gastric bypasses. In essence, a bypass is creating a very small stomach out of a portion of the upper stomach and then rerouting the intestinal tract to where the food is no longer going through the distal stomach in the first part of the intestinal tract.
Obviously, with the gastric bypass, it is a little bit more of a complex operation because, in essence, we are rearranging the patient's plumbing to a certain extent in order to provide them with that malabsorptive component. But these are very safe surgeries. And if you look at bariatric surgery in today's world, it's much different than what it was 20 years ago. These are safer procedures. We have better technology. We do things laparoscopically.
Our gastric bypasses are very similar to our gastric sleeves in that it's typically just an overnight hospital stay. And most of these patients are back to a desk job within about a week. We're looking for patients who are obese or who have developed significant underlying medical conditions as a result of their obesity, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, sleep apnea, coronary artery disease. Even at lower body mass indexes of 30 to 35, these are still very good patients who could be good candidates for surgery.
